Habit for the Month - October Review

Saturday, October 31, 2009

Well, the month of October was a focus on activities and maintaining the habits of previous months. I think the only thing that didn't get focused on was the homeschooling. We rarely sat down to do book work. However, education is more than book work and we did lots of other things - volunteering, reading, coloring, organizing, chores.

Our activities this month went really well. The Dr Seuss birthday party was fun to plan and execute. The Fireman's Ball was a blast!! My parents' visit was great!

Also in October we had a lot of sickness. J was not well most of the month and the kids alternated between each other being sick. I held off getting sick until they were all on the mend. I got sick yesterday; today my head is still swimming. Thankfully, J has been home for the last week so he's helped with things as did my parents for the week they were here. (While I'm thankful J has been home for a week, because I like to have him around, but we are sad and trying to leave it with God, that he's had no work all week.)

Birthday Party Pics

So, you wanna see some birthday party pics???

Cat in the Hat Birthday Cake in her "color".
My friend Tammy-Lee helped keep everyone organized and pose for pictures.

Cat in the Hat Birthday Cake in her "color", too.
She loves the Cool Butterfly Prints.
I plan to paint the frames black, but ran out of time before her birthday.

I did blow out the candle.
She got three baby dolls that night.

Happy Birthday, K.

Happy Birthday

Eight years ago today I gave birth to my very first baby. I was so very sure that I was having a boy. I called this baby a boy all through my whole pregnancy. J was sure that we were having a girl and laughed at me every time I said he or him. This dear baby GIRL arrived the day after my due date.

K - 2005

K's name came about as a compromise between my dh and I. I wanted to call her Christy, just as my parents had wanted to call me, but didn't due to a cousin being named something very similar (and happened to be born the day before me). But my dh didn't like the name Christy at the time. So I agreed to a change.

K is a wonderfully strong personality. She and I can really clash heads but not as much as we used to. K has become such a great helper. She is dependable and independent. She can't wait until she is old enough to care for her younger siblings so J and I can go out.

She loves horses and baking right now. Those are her main interests. She has asked for a cake decorating set. When she's baking cakes from a box, I don't have to help her at all! She can make burgers, grilled cheese sandwiches, soup from a can, pork and beans, mac and cheese.

K - 2006

Grama H sends music cards every year and this is the song that was in K's:

K is really enjoying choir and dance classes this year. She learned to read and is learning to draw really well. I am so thankful for the other teachers in her life.

Happy 1st Birthday, Baby R

Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Happy 1st Birthday, Baby R!

Baby R turns one year old today! And what a year it has been! One year ago, very early in the morning Baby R entered this world. She came quite quickly and her daddy had to help me deliver without the extra help we like to have. She'd grown a lot since her arrival. And she's been doted on by some very special people since then too!

R - October 27, 2008

Baby R is such a charmer and a tease. She has been developing into her own little person over the last year. She has learned to sit and crawl and walk and run! She has laughs and coos and converses with us all in her sweet little way.

R - June 2009

Baby R has her favorite people. Mommy. Auntie Tammy-Lee. Mo. Uncle John. Grandpa S. Grandma too, even if she does have to bribe R a little. She likes big tall men. And she loves her sister, CJ. R and her brother, W, have a love/hate relationship!

Grama H sends music cards. R's card had this song in it:

Baby R loves baby dolls. And she got three or four for her birthday today! I love it. Earlier this month she was wandering around hugging CJ's doll. CJ wanted her doll back and was trying to get R to take a stuffed dog or something. R would have nothing to do with it! She kicked and screamed until CJ relented and gave the baby doll back! I knew then that a baby doll was on her wish list.

Fireman's Ball 2009

Monday, October 26, 2009

J and I decided to take ballroom dancing lessons this year and October 24th was one of the reasons. I can't believe we almost didn't dance the whole evening! My parents and youngest brother joined us for the dinner portion and waited around to see us dance at least one dance. Well the one dance we did before they left to relieve our babysitter was not any of the dances that we learned.

Well, the DJ came by our table wondering how to get the 3 couples sitting there out on the dance floor. We were all being pretty lovey-dovey and not getting out there even during the slow songs. So it came up and got out that two of the couple (J and I included) were taking ballroom dancing. And we let her know which dances. So she played one song for each dance - the ChaCha and the Rhumba. J almost refused to go out because there were not many who were ballroom dancers; most were dancing the two-step. But I convinced him by saying that he couldn't make MM & DL (the other ballroom dancing class members) dance out there by themselves! lol It took a little bit, but we got in the groove and it didn't feel like everyone was watching us. It was so much fun!!!

Oh, and the response I got from MM when I first walked in!!!! Oh. My. Goodness. He was quite shocked. Well, when I got to thinking about it, most of these fire fighters only ever see me in my "mommy-wear" - jeans and long-sleeved t-shirts / sweaters. So then I started paying attention to others and their reactions. You know, I was dressed very modestly and quite pretty (even had a new to me dress!). Well, everyone seemed impressed with my appearance, especially my hubby! Now maybe that's conceited to say, but it felt good to be noticed. I did put in effort and it was worth it. I wasn't out there looking for others to notice me; that wasn't my purpose in dressing as I did. I dressed to impress my dh, and go to a function in honor of him and the work he does in our community and our county.

I was sad that my guy didn't win any awards. He does work hard for the fire fighters and is with them often. The only one that I thought he might get was Fire Fighter of the Year. However that award went to MM. The other big award (J didn't qualify) was Rookie of the Year and that went to DL. I'm so glad that if J couldn't win, that they did; they deserve the awards, too.

The supper was great. Ham and roast beef with all the fixings with fruit and cheesecake for dessert!

The music was incredible and the DJ so so much fun! She was back from last year by popular demand; J and I have met her outside of her job and she's a HOOT! My parents had so much fun watching her! Benita Pederson owns and operates ALL FIRED UP DJ & KARAOKE SERVICES. (I couldn't find a link to her website - maybe she doesn't have one - so that's a link to her Facebook page.)

I stayed out way too late and drank a little. I came home very exhausted 4 hours earlier than my dh who was the designated driver (using our bus). I went straight to bed and slept for as long as I could in the morning.

Now, that's over. Time to start planning the Fire Fighter's Christmas Party (for the families of the fire fighters).

Mere Christianity by CS Lewis

Saturday, October 24, 2009

A great quote:

I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: 'I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept His claim to be God.' That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic -- on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg -- or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.

Happy Birthday, CJ.

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Image search at PicPoke.com

Seven years ago, in the evening, on this day, our little CJ came into this world. She loves to hear how she came a little different than all her siblings. She's my only c-section to date and was my first (of 2) hospital births. We tell her that she wanted to come out the wrong way - feet first - and so the doctor had to cut Mommy and pull her out.

CJ, 2005

CJ is a special girl. She is fun-loving. She is kind-hearted. She is the peacemaker. She loves people, but is very very shy. And then you get to know her!

CJ can be so silly.

She's the one with the most allergies / sensitivities. If she gets a cold or eats Cheetos, she often breaks out in hives.

CJ prefers "inside work". She's well suited to be a mom and a wife. (In my opinion.) If there is a gardening or yard task to be done, she'll fight you tooth and nail not to do it. But helping with the babies, she'll not question. Usually.

Grama H sends music cards every year and CJ got this song this year:

CJ is my second oldest, and only 51 weeks younger than her older sister.

Oil Pulling

On July 28th, I mentioned that I was going to try Oil Pulling. I did try it. I didn't really notice a difference in anything mouth or throat related. However, my dh said would question me every once in a while, "Did you do your oil pulling today?" It was always on days when I DIDN'T use the oil. He said that my breath smelled different. So I kept at it. My first experience was not pretty.

Oil is gross. Even oil that doesn't have an oily flavor is gross. I have a pretty strong gag reflex. The first couple of times I used too much oil, even though it was the suggested amount of about a tablespoon. For me, a measuring spoon tablespoon is too much. It gets too far back in my throat and causes me to gag and then I have to spit it out and that defeats the purpose, in my opinion.

The next couple of times I used just a tablespoon spoon (like what you'd put on the table), so it measures less and I can handle it better. So, what do you do? (You can read at Earth Clinic, but I'll tell you here too.) You take a tablespoon of oil (different oils give different results; I am currently using Olive Oil, because that's what's in the house, but I started with Safflower Oil and it's an easier "flavor" to start with, in my opinion.) and you just hold it in your mouth. No swishing. No gargling. Earth Clinic suggests:

INSTRUCTIONS:

First thing in the morning, before brushing your teeth, eating or drinking, take 1 TBSP of either sesame or sunflower oil. Put the oil in your mouth, tilt your chin up and slowly swish, suck, chomp and pull through the teeth. Do this for at least 10 minutes. 15 - 20 minutes is better. You want the oil to become a thin, white foam when you finally spit it out. If it's still yellow, you haven't done it long enough.

You can do this 2 more times during the day if you want to detox faster. Make sure you do it on an empty stomach, however. Spit it out in the toilet when your mouth is full and rinse your mouth out well.

Follow by drinking 2 - 3 glasses of water.

There are further warnings and notes here. The oil, when you are done should be white and foamy. Ten minutes is hard to do, especially with a house full of little ones that need Mommy to speak with them in the morning. I don't think I've ever made it to 20 minutes. One trick I used was to get my mouthful of oil and hop in the shower, do my hair and makeup, get dressed, and then spit and brush. That got me the closest to 20 minutes.

I had quit oil pulling because my teeth had started to hurt so badly and then I had them pulled. I didn't want the oil pulling to pull out my clots and result in dry sockets, so I hadn't been pulling for almost a month. (I don't know that the oil would have pulled out the clots but I certainly didn't want to chance it!) I did notice a difference in my health; I started getting the colds and such that the rest of my family were getting. My mouth is much less sore now and so I started again. Just two days in now.

Yesterday was kinda whatever, but today I coughed up some icky-ness. I'll spare you the details, but WOW! I never would have cleared that from my throat without the oil. J coughs up stuff all the time and actually has been unsuccessful with oil pulling because it works too well for him; it brings out so much that he's coughing and gagging even more than usual. (Which says to me he needs to do it more, so he can get that icky-ness OUT!)

There is anecdotal evidence on Earth Clinic that suggests specific results from different oils:

Sesame Oil: helps with back pain, periodontal disease, bleeding gums, loose teeth.
Sunflower Oil: brightens teeth, clears up hives, bad breath, dry skin, clears acne.
Olive Oil: clears sinusitis, new energy, clears eczema, tooth pain, cracked heels.

So, in reading a little more to write this post, I found some more tips and hints to try; I can't wait to see what kinds of things this "cures" for me.

Thinking On Scripture

Sunday, October 18, 2009

There is so much good in 1 Thessalonians 5:

12 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you.
13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.
14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.
15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.
16 Be joyful always;
17pray continually;
18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
19 Do not put out the Spirit's fire;
20 do not treat prophecies with contempt.
21 Test everything. Hold on to the good.
22 Avoid every kind of evil.
23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.
25 Brothers, pray for us.
26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.
27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers.
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Thought Provoking Discussions

Saturday, October 17, 2009

My Saturday evening has been spent studying and discussing with friends. It has been interesting and tough. Things discussed include: the correct sabbath day, hell, predestination, who has the right religion/belief. Some of these things will never be agreed upon between us; I think we may just have to agree to disagree on the specifics. We each feel very strongly about what we believe; we believe that we are right and the others are wrong and vise versa.

I believe that we do not have to observe Saturday as the Sabbath. I was just reading over at Blue Letter Bible about why Christians moved to Sunday versus continuing with Saturday. They have some good points. Those who observe the Lord's Day on Saturday have valid points as well. Can we both be right? Or is one wrong? Does it really matter? Is it a salvation issue? The point our friend brought up tonight is that this is one of the 10 Commandments. God obviously thinks it is important, but what is important about it - the specific day or that we actually take the time one day in a week to honor him and to rest? Or what about this - we like to rest on Saturday and meet for worship on Sunday? Some would consider us lazy then. We just can't win; you can't please everyone.

I believe there is a hell. Some questions that came up: are there different levels of hell? Will our bodies burn forever? Or is hell for our souls and our bodies will just burn up and be consumed by the fire, but our souls burn forever? Does it really matter? Or does it simply matter that we do believe that God will punish those who do not follow him?

We didn't discuss it a lot but part of the conversation did turn toward predestination and free will. Do we really have a free will? Or is God directing a lot more than we give Him credit for? Or does he give and take our free will at his discretion? So if God is deciding that some are predestined for heaven and some are not then that means God wants people to go to hell? How does that fit in with our lovey dovey view of God? But if there is free will, how do we really know that we have the right way? The free will adds an element of doubt.

Do Christians really have the right path? Or is it some other group / cult / religion? Where or how do you balance questioning / doubt / learning / education / debate? Where do you draw the line?

I think I'll take a break. My head hurts. I am open and willing to learn and read and try to understand. I don't really want to be mediocre; I want to be more like Christ. However, there is that aspect of having the faith of a little child. I might just go back to that and not think so hard and so long about these HUGE issues. I feel more confused than when we started.

I am saved from my sins; Jesus is my Savior. I am going to heaven; there is a hell. Free will or not, I'm with HIM. Until God shows me otherwise, my conscience is clear resting on Saturday and meeting for worship on Sunday. And I pray for lively, friendly, educating discussions that create peace in our hearts and our homes; that God teaches each one where s/he is at that moment and brings each one closer to Himself.

The striving is evident tonight!

Another Year Goes By - Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

Thursday, October 15, 2009

Here is my post from last year.

In March of 2004, J and I lost a baby boy who died of birth complications at 12 days old. Here is Harvey's birth story and notes (scroll about halfway down the page).

I just don't have it in me to write anymore this week about this. We are in a different and better place, but grief is so cyclical; it comes and goes. It is getting easier. It's been 5.5 years now. They say seven years is kinda a break through point. I don't know who they are or what they know about grief, but I do know it's getting easier, but I don't ever want to forget either.

Today I am remembering with candles lit. And although I am sad, I am glad; little Harvey is in heaven with Jesus! There isn't a better place to be! One day I'll join him!

Another Thanksgiving Long Weekend Is Upon Us

Remember this post from a year ago? Fast forward 12 months and you can picture what we did this weekend. However, this year it is a lot cooler! There is even snow on the ground this year. I'll try to post some pictures.

Last year J participated in Heroes in the Sky by sleeping on the roof of a restaurant. You can see photos here. That was in September. As you can see from the pictures it's quite warm. The two who slept on the roof Friday night were dressed much warmer! They are in full bunker gear - head to toe, from what I understand. It got to a low of -6C or about 21 or 22F. If the reporters for our paper showed up, I'll post pics when the paper comes out with them.

On Sunday we had thanksgiving dinner with my brother and his girlfriend. We had a nice day.

Praising - What was lost is found!

Saturday, October 10, 2009

When Harvey was in the hospital in March of 2004 my aunt and uncle were very much a huge part of our lives and they came to visit Harvey and us while we were there and brought their camera; they got a lot of pictures. They printed them onto a disc for me so they would be easy to share with our parents and others. Well, after J's mom got a copy I could never find the disk again. That was in 2005.

Today K brought me a disc, expecting me to be mad because she'd ripped the envelope she'd gotten it out of. I was in tears almost instantly; the poor girl didn't know what to do! So very very thankful to have my copy back; they are now on my computer and on the web so I have them even if my computer crashes!

Here's a couple of the shots they got:

Date Night - Dancing The Rumba (Rhumba)

Friday, October 9, 2009

Our date night is on Wednesday. We have dance on Wednesday. We almost didn't go this week; J was exhausted from working (wheelbarrowing concrete) and I'd just had my teeth pulled on Monday. But I didn't wanna miss it so we pushed ourselves to go. I'm glad we did. There is just something about dancing that eases the tension but is hard physical exercise too. Maybe that's part of it though.

J really likes the Rhumba. (I've seen it spelled both ways, so I don't know which way to spell it.) I watched some you tube videos of the dance and there is a lot you can do with it; I can't wait until we are really good at it!

We ended the evening off with drinks with friends at our home. I like dates with friends.

Habit for the Month - October

Winter hit this week. We're cold! It's October, so it's time. I am thinking about moving south. (Just kidding. We just have to get used to this again.)

This month is going to be a focus on activities. We have three birthdays, a ball, a visit from my parents, two Thanksgiving dinners. I need to plan and execute or attend these things. Also, while November might slow down some, Christmas is coming too. So I want to focus on activities this month.

In addition I am going to keep on keeping on with our homeschooling routine; it's getting better. I work best in the morning; my kids do not. The other day I had them sit down at around 3 and they worked really well. I feel like we really got some bookwork accomplished. So we are trying that again today.

Just a quick review:

  • January - Morning Routine is still going well.
  • February - One basket of laundry folded and put away daily; my "laundry couch" is currently covered with only folded laundry.
  • March -Dishes are currently all done except for breakfast this morning!
  • April - Reading, both to the kids and to myself, needs more work. I am working on this one without much success through a fall reading challenge (see the button on the side bar).
  • May - Spending less time on the computer is working; I have less of a desire to sit here for long periods; I still do from time to time but the state of my house proves that I am working on it and spending time with my children too.
  • June - My living room is under control still, except that it is full of ripening spaghetti squash.
  • July - OOPS, didn't plan for one.
  • August - Adding more water is still a struggle.
  • September - Regular homeschooling is coming; we're getting there.
