Monday, August 31, 2009

Photobucket

For the next 30 days I am planning on joining my friend, Amber, in posting a recipe per day. The recipes I will be posting are meals or parts of meals that I have served my family over the summer and fall.

The plan for our week, with meal ideas.

Well, the new month is upon us! And is filling up fast.

Monday is an afternoon with friends from church with supper at their home. Monday evening is Simply Sensational Divas Review Twitter Party. (Make sure you sign up and join in! Giveaways to be announced and won!!!)

Tuesday is baking (hopefully) with Grandma Irene. (For those of you who knew she was ill, I just wanted to let you know that she is doing much better.) J has a meeting that night, so supper will have to be something quick.

Wednesday is library day.

Thursday is J's fire practice, so something quick again.

Friday is still totally empty!! WOOHOO!

Saturday is a "Welcome to our World" party for a new baby in our church! Potluck meals are always so fun!

Habit for the Month - August's Review

Sunday, August 30, 2009

So this month we made some health changes - better food, less junk, more exercise and more water. Well, I did really well with cutting the junk until this last week. I've done okay with the exercise; I want to do more in that area. We've kept up with the better food - fruit and vegetables! I've not done so well with the more water, except that I've cut pop, and replaced it with either fruit juice (watered down) or just plain water. I still need to work on this though.

One thing that we've noticed with eating better is that the grocery budget needs to expand with that. We'd cut our budget to almost half of what it had been when we were working through Financial Peace University. The new budget was too small because we resorted to eating cheap pastas, breads and not very many veggies. We've upped our budget to make up for the changes in our diet. Eating well is important to us.

One Year To An Organized Life - Last Week of August

This week is titled MOVING DAY. If you follow these tips, the day of your move will be so smooth. Some of the tips include:

  • remember - last on, FIRST off
  • have a couple of boxes marked as ESSENTIALS, so they are easy to find; some ESSENTIALS boxes include "family", "pet", "kitchen", "emergency household"
  • play music while you unpack
  • tip movers if tip is deserved
Although we are not moving now, I know that this chapter will become handy one day, either for us personally or as we help others move.

Always, I Love Your Wings!!!

Thursday, August 27, 2009

(NOTE: I'm not going to put a warning on here, because I know most of my readers will read it anyway! Or I guess you could consider this little note, your warning.)

The other day I made a quick stop at the local Rexall while I was out getting the mail. J was home with the children and I never like leaving him alone with them long because he's on call 24/7 with the fire department. If he gets a call while I'm gone he misses the "bus" and that's less funds for us and less guys on the job. So I was in a hurry; I just needed to pick up a package of pads. My normal brand is Always - the yellow ones, with the wings. Honestly, I didn't think the yellow ones came without wings!

Anyway, I grabbed a package and headed to the check out. Thankfully, the line was short and I got out of there quickly and went home. When I went to use one of this new package I was a little disturbed but really tried to be okay with the fact that these had no wings! No WINGS!

I thought, "Well, it can't be that bad. I don't like all the chaffing and they never stick right anyway!"

Well, I WANT MY WINGS BACK! Honestly, I'd rather the chaffing than the mess! I'd rather them stick funny than not have them at all! I am not protected without my wings! Always, please, never stop making them with wings! I am a generally a brand loyal person and will switch to another product within the same brand if they stop making what I normally buy, but I'm afraid that if Always ever stopped making pads with wings, I'd never buy Always again!

I was not paid, nor given free product to review. I'm just relating my experience!

Did you know what's available on the Always website? They have questions that will tell you the best pad for you. (I need to have a different option then the yellow ones with wings. I might go check out some of the suggestions I received from their questionnaire. Oh, and the yellow ones without wings was NOT on that list! Just in case you were wondering.) They have tips for moms to help their daughters understand their body changes. Free samples are available as well.

Two Years!

I have been blogging for two years! I can't believe it!

I started over at homeschoolblogger.com when I decided I needed a way to log our homeschooling. A lot of the posts there are hidden and for my eyes only because they are just notes about what we did each day (they are boring). I have 242 blog posts at that blog. Feel free to go visit; I think I've come a long way in the last two years.

I started at blogger.com in August of 2008. I just recently bought my own domain; I have around 500 posts here! I am really loving my blog. I hope you love reading it.

I won a blog makeover and love what Miss Jocelyn did. Miss Jocelyn donates half of all profits to Gleaning The Harvest. Gleaning the Harvest helps single moms, widows and the father-less.

Why do I blog? It takes time and as a homeschooling mom of 5 little ones I don't always have a lot of time. And maybe my time could be better spent elsewhere. My blog has become an outlet for me though. It is a journal of sorts; it's just my thoughts with a few of the thoughts of my family too. :) I have become a little more open and honest; blogging from the heart. There are just somethings that are easier to work through "on paper". I used to journal in notebooks but have moved to my blog; it's easier in today's world. I blog to let our extended family and far away friends know what's going on with our life. It is through my blog that they get to see pictures and hear what the kids are doing now.

In the coming year, you will see more changes as I grow and develop in my writing and other computer and publishing skills. You will continue to see posts on marriage and relationships. I will keep writing about books and housekeeping. I will tell all about our renovations and yard changes and our gardening. You will hear about our homeschooling too. Some new stuff you can expect are a few reviews and maybe even a giveaway or two. I don't want to focus on these things on Just Our Thoughts, because I do reviews here. (More on that in a minute.)

I started J a blog, too. He doesn't write there often (or rather, he doesn't have me write there for him very often), but it is a place for us to be a little bit vocal on things that just make us frustrated, angry or shake our heads. It's political at times. It's not as censored as this one is. You are welcome to read and follow us at The Rantings of an Average Joe. So far we've talked about employment insurance, racism, personal property, and political correctness. And I know J has a couple posts currently brewing.

There is another place in the blogging world that I make my mark, so to speak. Late last year (2008) I joined 6 other women in a review venture; Simply Sensational Divas Review is home to Christy, Christi, Stephanie, Kim, Tammy, Cathy and me! Please stop by for a visit. We've been having an official launch party for the whole month of August; our giveaways are about to end and we will be announcing the winners at a Twitter party on the evening of August 31st! You don't wanna miss it!

Do Not Disturb and Tackle It Tuesday

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

So, this is the second week of Do Not Disturb Tuesday, hosted by Amber and myself. This week we decided to schedule our Tackles for your reading pleasure should you happen to stop by today while we are away tending to our real lives.

I didn't get any pictures yet, but the kids and I have been working on some All About Me lapbooks from Live n Learn Press. I'll be sure to post pictures when we get them done. It involves a lot of cutting and pasting and writing. Great learning.

Another things I've been tackling is the clean laundry pile resulting from tackling this pile from a couple of weeks ago. Surprisingly, and thankfully, both bedrooms are STILL CLEAN! I am so very glad. I know that K is working towards some furniture for her room. I can't wait to be able to give it to her!

So what am I doing today, while I'm away? I think we'll go to the park. We'll work on the lapbook. Oh and a big thing that I haven't told my kids about yet. August 25th is Banana Split Day! We're going to have Banana Splits with our community! I'm not going to be turning on the computer. I got a few reviews off my to do list on Monday; you can check them out over at Simply Sensational Divas Review and don't forget to enter our giveaways!

Next week, I think I'll write about the things I do on my computer to prepare for Do Not Disturb Tuesday. If you want to read the rules of Do Not Disturb Tuesday you can find them here and here. Jump in, let us know what and how you did in the comments.

Then Sings My Soul - Sounds Like Life To Me

Here are the words:
(taken from here)

Got a call last night from an old friend’s wife
Said I hate to bother you
Johnny Ray fell off the wagon
He’s been gone all afternoon
I know my buddy so I drove to Skully’s
And found him at the bar
I say hey man, what’s going on
He said I don’t know where to start

Sarah’s old car’s about to fall apart
And the washer quit last week
We had to put momma in the nursing home
And the baby’s cutting teeth
I didn’t get much work this week
And I got bills to pay
I said I know this ain’t what you wanna hear
But it’s what I’m gonna say

(Chorus)
Sounds like life to me it ain’t no fantasy
It’s just a common case of everyday reality
Man I know it’s tough but you gotta suck it up
To hear you talk you’re caught up in some tragedy
It sounds like life to me

Well his face turned red and he shook his head
He said you don’t understand
Three kids and a wife depend on me
And I’m just one man
To top it off I just found out
That Sarah’s 2 months late
I said hey bartender set us up a round
We need to celebrate

(Chorus)
Sounds like life to me plain old destiny
Yeah the only thing for certain is uncertainty
You gotta hold on tight just enjoy the ride
Get used to all this unpredictability
Sounds like life

Man I know its tough but you gotta suck it up
To hear you talk you’re caught up in some tragedy
Sounds like life to me
Sounds like life

******************

Life; that's just the way it goes. Suck it up and let's get on with it.

Date Night - Nothing Specific

Friday, August 21, 2009

 width=

Well, this week was really busy, or at least it seemed that way. We ended up not carving out any specific time for just us. Instead I turned off my computer a little more and put the kids to bed a little earlier than usual. We just sat and watched tv and podded peas together. We would mute the tv during the commercials and talk.

We did a lot of talking this week even though it was busy. And we needed it. I don't wanna go into specifics in this post (there will be others I'm sure) but let's leave it at this: We came to the conclusion that our relationship has hit a rough patch and has been in a rough patch for a while. We are both at fault, but a lot of it has to do with ME and my attitude and emotions.

I am choosing joy, choosing to be happy, choosing to remember why I love and like this man I'm married to. I am dating him again, even though he may not know it. I am adding spice to our relationship, making it fun again. I am working on me and doing things that make me a better wife and mother.

If you wanna join in or just read a funny (or not so funny) fishing story, jump on over to My Chick Flick.

The Mommy Confessions - My Laundry Mountain is Clean Laundry

Thursday, August 20, 2009

The Mommy Confessions
Every mom has something that she would like to get off her chest…whether it is big, little or in-between there is always a little something to tell. So, that’s what The Mommy Confessions are all about…confessing. Write a post about your confession for the week and then leave a link to it in the linky…or if you aren’t a blogger go ahead and just leave your confession right in the comments section.
The linky and the place to comment is on this blog.

Now, on to my confession!

I do not fold laundry if at all possible. I used to, when it was just me and DH and maybe one more. My DH is pretty laid back; if he has clean dry underwear and pants he's good with that. They don't have to be in his drawer; they don't have to be folded; they should be easy to find though.

As of this moment, I have one load waiting to be washed; I have 2 loads on the line outside, 2 loads on the line downstairs, and probably close to 15 on various chairs and in baskets in my living room. It's just a huge over flowing mountain of clean clothing! Everything is there - blankets, sheets, towels, socks, underwear, pants. Everything.

How about your laundry? What does it look like?

the Divas - I've not met a one of them in real life, but they are so dear to me.

Starting Tomorrow - Do Not Disturb Tuesday

Monday, August 17, 2009

Yesterday I had a conversation with Amber that went something like this:

Am: I gotta start getting more life outta my days.
Me: I know what you mean.
Am: The saying it's easy, I'm really struggling with the doing.
I think I need to give up this computer.
Me: :-( I know. Me too.
Am: I don't think I get as much accomplished as I could.
Me: Yes. I think I'm going to have to stay away to get things
done and use this for pleasure.

Both Amber and I have lost focus. (Did we ever have it?) We never wanted the internet to become the center and focus of our worlds. We both have families and hubbies and friends in the real world. As important as our friendships are online, they shouldn't be more important than those we live with. What I mean to say is, I don't talk to some of my closest IRL friends everyday and yet I have started to think that if I don't talk to my online friends everyday I am deprived.

My dh and I were also talking yesterday about how my housework suffers BECAUSE of the internet. I get so focused on what is "out there" that I forget about what is RIGHT here. My kids have been telling me, "all you ever do is sit at your computer". ouch! I need to listen to that! And now that we are getting back into our homeschool / fall routine my focus does need to be here.

And so to quote Amber:
That being said we came up with Do Not Disturb Tuesday. A day to set the online world aside and focus on the wonderful blessings life has afforded us. Starting tomorrow and hopefully for many Tuesdays to come LaDonna and myself will turn off our computers until Wednesdays. If we have a blog post to go out it will be written another day and scheduled for Tuesday or it can just wait all together. I think that it goes without being said actions speak louder then words and I don't want people to look at my actions and think wow she cared more about the d*mn internet then her family or her home or...ya get the picture.

AMEN, friend!!!

Please consider joining us on Tuesdays and enjoy your families, friends and your real life. Then on Wednesday, come and tell us about it. Do Not Disturb Tuesday is open to anyone who comes in contact with Come Here Little Bug or Just Our Thoughts.

Our rules are simple:

  • respect the concept of Do Not Disturb Tuesday.
  • stay away from the internet in any form - including but not limited to your phone, twitter, email, instant messengers (except if you HAVE TO for your job).
  • devote Tuesdays to the other parts of your life.
  • if you use our button, link to one or both of us.
  • if you're a blogger, consider making a post on Wednesday's updating everyone on what you did on Tuesday.
  • comments will be open to all bloggers and non-bloggers alike.
  • we will attempt to put up a linky every Wednesday.

And in the words of Bob the Builder, "Can we do it? Yes, WE CAN!" And my family will thank me.

One Year To An Organized Life - August: Moving Week Two

Sunday, August 16, 2009

Packing Time!

You know, we've moved a lot since we were married and growing up, we moved a lot then too! I've had lots of experience with moving. My dad was a good packer. We never hired movers that I remember. And J and I haven't ever done that. Over the years we've gotten good at packing and thinking the move through before moving day.

Even though I'm not packing up to move this month, I think I might start slowly sorting through things asking myself some pointed questions and get some of the clutter out of my house.

1. Do I love it?
2. Do I need it?
3. Do I have more than one? Do I need more than one?
4. Does it have a home?
5. Would I cart it across the country or move it to a new home?
6. Do I know someone who can use it?
7. Is it just trash?

For example, we are given clothes all the time. I love hand-me-downs, but I have so many that I've kept that we are missing out on using them because I am overwhelmed by the quantity. I would never haul this many items to a new home. I don't love it; I have more than one, more than what's needed even for my 4 girls. So, some of those things will go.

Regina Leeds offers many great suggestions for packing your belongings including when to hire professionals and when to just do it yourself.

Thinking On Scripture

23For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23, King James Version)

5Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; (Titus 3:5, King James Version)

21Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 7:21, King James Version)

8Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; 9And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; (Hebrews 5:8-9, King James Version)

8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9, King James Version)

15If ye love me, keep my commandments. (John 14:15, King James Version)

The Mommy Confessions - I Work My Kids Hard

Saturday, August 15, 2009

The Mommy Confessions

Every mom has something that she would like to get off her chest…whether it is big, little or in-between there is always a little something to tell. So, that’s what The Mommy Confessions are all about…confessing. Write a post about your confession for the week and then leave a link at Life Starring The Kids and Me …or if you aren’t a blogger go ahead and just leave your confession right in the comments section over there.
Here's my confession: I work my children hard. I expect a lot of them. I think I am right in this. All around me I see children who don't know how to work; I see laziness and coddling. Coddled children become useless adults and unspanked grandmothers who who are meddlesome and needy.

My children are not the norm; we homeschool in an extremely relaxed fashion. Life is learning. And we work together on almost everything. Tonight as I write this I'm doing something different; I'm sending them to bed early! And I have opted to do the clean up alone! This is strange to me and to them. I think they appreciate the break and I will love the quiet. Even Baby R is sleeping already.

What does a normal day hold for my kids?

Get up, dressed, clean room, brush teeth and hair, one chore.
Breakfast and meal clean up
School including at least 2 pages of math
Play
Help make and clean up lunch.
Play and chores in the afternoon - take out trash and compost, clean up toys and books.
Help make supper and clean up.
Bedtime - bath, teeth, jammies, etc.

They help in the yard and garden. As the oldest is 7, they are really responsible for their ages. K and CJ go to the library to get books alone. The library is across the street and down half a block. K has moved a piece of the yard herself (with Daddy supervising). They know how to handle an axe. They know about fire. They know how to use knives. Whatever we are doing, they are right there too. Hauling wood, or trash, or planting or harvesting the garden. Or whatever is fun. Swimming in the river, going to a late night campfire.

Why do they know how to do these "dangerous" things? Because we've made them learn. We've given them the experience. Maybe I'm just lazy and I'd rather sit here at my computer than help my children get their own slice of cheese. Or maybe I really just want them to be capable adults that can function well in the world.

I don't baby my kids; I work them hard. And I'm proud of the way my kids are turning out. But it's hard to say to people in real life.

Books and Coffee

Welcome to my blog! Grab a cup of coffee (or whatever your beverage of choice is this morning).

Today I talk about what we are reading and a short (sometimes, not so short) update. So here goes:

Now reading: The Vision by CL Talmadge
On the waiting list: the next two books in the Green Stone of Healing series by Talmadge, The Captain's Wife by Douglas Kelley and How Children Fail by John Holt.

I'm thinking about joining in on a Random Reading Challenge over at Caribousmom but I haven't jumped on board yet. It looks neat but I'm not sure I am ready for the randomness required.

Kids' read-aloud:
The Milly-Molly-Mandy Storybook by Joyce Lankester Brisley

We are starting to get into our daily school work a little bit now. The older two are doing 2 pages of math work each day. And our letter of the week that usually takes 2 or 3 weeks is Gg. I chose gorillas as our animal to go with the letter.

I got the following books for us to read and look at:
Little W picked his own books:Wednesday's are library days. The inter-library loan books arrive Tuesday's and our eggs are delivered to the library on Wednesday's. (The "egg lady" brings us farm fresh eggs from her hens.) So I combine the egg pick up with the book pick up and we spend some time on the computers there (no turn taking required, usually) and we pick books. I'd stopped going, and was just sending one of the kids to get the books and eggs, but now Baby R is big enough that she can last a little longer without getting fussy while the others do there thing.

On to other topics:

We have been pulling up the pea plants and bringing in the peas. It's a lot of work; we have a lot of peas. J and I have been shelling them in front of the television in the evenings. We planted three wide and long rows. So far we've brought in 1.5 rows! And we have lots already. I'm so excited; usually our peas don't make it to the freezer.

The caragana hedge is starting to pop. It means fall is coming. The little seed pods, a lot like a pea pod, are popping open as they dry out in the summer heat. I hear them popping and dropping when I'm hanging clothes out on the line.

We were going to put the bus on the road this week. Now we are not. I'm bummed but at the same time waiting is the better financial decision. By mid-September we will have a medical bill paid and can then afford the insurance better. Then by Christmas, one of my student loans will be paid and that's even better! I guess another four weeks isn't too long to wait to have wheels.

On Friday night we are hosting a supper in our home. We have invited a few of the single fire fighters over for a turkey dinner. I'm so excited. I love having people over for meals; we are friends. And serving food is a great way to encourage people to relax and chat; we get to know each other better. J gets to know these individuals at the fire hall each week, but I don't. During the summer, I get to spend a little more time with them because we have campfires and bbqs with them, but in the winter I get to spend time with them at the ball and at our Christmas party; that's about it.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed your visit here at my blog. Come back soon.

Date Night - A Slippery Night In

Thursday, August 13, 2009

I have recently added to my "blogs I follow" list a blog about marriage called Adding Zest To Your Nest. Our date night this week stems from this post from that blog called Slip N Slide. Go read the post and you'll get the idea. This week's date didn't cost me anything because we had all the supplies needed in the house. I put the kids to bed early and told my DH as he left for a meeting that he needed to not be out all night and to not bring anyone home with him. My guy got a well-deserved surprise when he got home.
